Oratory Award Winners 2024

This award was created to celebrate the power of the individual voice. It is awarded to students who are selected to deliver speeches on Speech Day. These are students who have demonstrated proficient command of rhetoric in terms of depth of knowledge, organisation of their material and confident delivery.

“Resilience” by Ayzah, Year 7

“The resilience Ayzah talks about is an attribute she has demonstrated consistently this year in her approach to life. Her hard work, efforts and willingness to go above and beyond have been commented on by a range of staff and her passion for performing has also been demonstrated in a range of ways including through Poetry by Heart and a Remembrance Day assembly.”

“Why we should prioritise space exploration more” by Leon, Year 8

“Leon’s speech about the importance of investing in space is characteristic of the genuine scholarship and depth of thought that Leon shows. He has made great contributions to the Lower School Debating Society this year. His articulacy was also on display when he was presenting as part of the Formula One Technology programme, where his team “Dark Matters”, won the Fastest Car Award E-Class at the regional final in York.”

“The Power of Your Voice” by Maryam, Year 9

“Maryam talks today about the power of your voice. Her eloquence and commitment to this theme has been demonstrated this year through her engagement with fighting the battle against litter in Calderdale. She presented at the Calderdale Council meeting with two companions and provoked a round of applause - a feat rarely seen in the chamber. A member of the public wrote to us to comment on their superbly well-researched and crafted speeches. The Council work inspired her to get involved with Parliament and Maryam is now the Youth Representative for Calderdale in the Youth Parliament.”
